GUEST SPEAKERS' BACKGROUND:
RAY CIRINO - Owner of Cobanation and who is an experienced and innovative cobber whose instructions and efforts made this beautiful oven possible
ALISON HERSON - of American Flatbread. American Flatbread is a return to bread's roots, an endeavor not to mass-produce bread but to explore the possibility of how good bread can be. This endeavor began in the small kitchen of Gladys Ford in a cabin by a clean, cold lake in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. American Flatbread began as an experiment in post-modern bread baking. We have reached back to the very beginning of bread baking and used the same methods; simple wholesome ingredients shaped by hands of thoughtful caring people baked in a primitive wood-fired earthen oven. The nature of the bread we eat—from the way the grain is grown and harvested, milled, mixed, and baked, to how it is administered and policed, from how it is hoarded or shared to whether its production enriches or enslaves—will shape our own nature and the destiny of our culture.

The Future of Food was shown over a dozen times as a work in progress in Mendocino County, California before the March 2004 election and was the primary element in passing Measure H which bans the planting of genetically engineered crops in the county. It is the first time U.S. citizens have voted on this very important issue.

GUEST SPEAKERS' BACKGROUND:
DEBORAH KOONS GARCIA - Deborah Koons Garcia fell in love with filmmaking when she first picked up a Bolex while a student at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1970. She was the instigator and chief Creative Consultant for Grateful Dawg, a documentary about the musical friendship between her husband Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. Grateful Dawg premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and went on to a lively run in film festivals, in theaters and on television.
"My goal was to make a film that gave the average person a clear understanding of how genetic engineering works, from the cellular level to the global level. I'm hoping this film can be a combination of SILENT SPRING, and THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS. Once you see it you'll feel compelled to act, even if that means just changing the the kind of food you eat." ~ Deborah Koons Garcia ~

EVENT DESCRIPTION:
Our most optimistic expectations are no less than the realization of an old dream: 'What will fertilizing with stone dust accomplish? It will turn stones into bread...make barren regions (fruitful) (and) feed the hungry.'" ~ Julius Hensel; Bread From Stones (1894) ~
Research shows that many of our ordinary everyday foods have taken a significant dip in mineral content over the last half-century.
Adding finely ground gravel dust to soils is a tremendous boost to organic agriculture and can make it truly viable by adding up to a hundred elements and trace minerals needed by all life. Rock dust also nourishes the microorganisms in the soil, whose protoplasm is the basis of all living things.
Mineral deficiencies due to soil deficiencies could be behind dozens of common complaints, for without minerals, vitamins don’t work. The body depends heavily on enzymic reactions for the production of many of the living biochemicals needed for full health. Enzymes in turn are heavily dependent on minerals and trace elements. Minerals are the bedrock of life.
Adding rock dust to horse manure increases the nutritional / mineral value of the manure.
Adding rock dust to your compost raises the energy level of the compost, increasing the bacterial levels of the compost.
Feeding the soil rock dust, you will be feeding the soils bacteria that is present in the soil, replenishing the soil with the vital minerals it now lacks.
PRESENTER'S BACKGROUND: Andy Lopez, The Invisible Gardener ( www.invisiblegardener.com ), seen on PBS and heard on Don't Panic It's Organic every sat mornings on CRNI.NEt radio, operates a worldwide club called Club IG and has over 8,000 members will speak on Rock Dust,
The Invisible Gardener Andy Lopez goes to work with vinegar, a bag of flour, garlic cloves, peppermint soap, and a bottle of Tabasco sauce. He may sound like a Cajun chef, but he's actually one of the worlds most respected organic gardeners. He uses these items as pesticides. As time passes, more and more so-called safe chemicals are outlawed, he says, after society has been used as a guinea pig.

Because of their response to this dire situation, the Cubans have been praised for being the number one country in the world for their sustainable practices by the United Nations. Cut off from trade by the United States, in 1993 Cuba lost its critical oil imports from the Soviet Union almost overnight. The country had to learn to do without it, and today has lessons for the rest of the world about how it can be done. Learn how they managed to do it and what lessons could be taken from their experience with agrarian, low energy, cooperative lifestyle.
FILM DESCRIPTION: The Greening of Cuba video profiles Cuban farmers and scientists working to reinvent a sustainable agriculture, based on ecological principles and local knowledge rather than imported agricultural inputs. In their quest for self sufficiency, Cubans combine time-tested traditional methods with cutting edge bio-technology.
GUEST SPEAKER'S BACKGROUND: Rachel Bruhnke received a Masters of Science Degree in 2001 in Environmental Systems Engineering for her research on renewable energy policy in Cuba. Subsequently, she directed the Eco Cuba Exchange program at the NGO Global Exchange (www.globalexchange.org) , based in San Francisco, California.
The program linked US and Cuba professionals in the areas of sustainable management of natural resources and environmental protection. Ms. Bruhnke was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras for 3 years, has studied and worked in Peru, Ecuador and Costa Rica, and has traveled extensively through Latin America. She also holds a bilingual elementary teaching credential and is the mother of a Cuban American daughter. Ms. Bruhnke is currently working toward a PhD from the University of Havana, Cuba, researching the potential for US-Cuba trade in the environmental marketplace.

Situated on just 1/5 of an acre (1/10 under cultivation), The Path Project utilizes every available space and resource towards self-sufficiency. Through the active use of permaculture and intensive growing methods, The Path Project generated 6,000 pounds of food in 2003 and 2004.
The Path Project also incorporates additional principles towards sustainable living, including: Natural pest management, Energy Independence through homebrewed biodiesel, solar panels, and solar ovens, Simple living, and 'citified' farm animals.
Path to Freedom strives to inspire individuals to "think globally, act locally" by motivating them to live a simpler and more fulfilling life and through The Path Project, it is being proved that we can attain our goal if we advance along the path one step at a time.
FILM DESCRIPTION(S):
Beyond Organic: The Vision of Fairview Gardens(2000, 33 minutes)
Fairview Gardens is an urban farm located in Goleta, California, right in the middle of some of the most expensive real estate in the U.S. Managed for the past two decades by visionary farmer/photographer/author, Michael Ableman, this 12-acre organic farm has become a model of sustainable food production and community involvement, as well as an inspiration for thousands of people all over the world.
Beyond Organic tells the story of this amazing farm and its long battle to survive in the face of rapid suburban development. It explores the efforts of Ableman and his staff to diversify the farm, open it to educational tours for thousands of people -- especially schoolchildren -- and defend it against angry neighbors, hostile public officials and developers eager to re-zone the land for condominiums. It draws a sharp contrast between community supported agriculture and conventional chemical farming, and it calls on organic farmers to remember basic principles, including fair labor practices, as their farms grow in size and power.
It is a dramatic story with a happy ending. Other neighbors -- and eventually the entire Santa Barbara community -- rallied around Fairview Gardens and raised $800,000 to preserve it as a land trust, and as a source of inspiration, for future generations. Narrated by Meryl Streep.
Global Gardener: Permaculture with Bill Mollison (1996, 28 minutes)
Bill Mollison is a practical visionary. For nearly two decades he has traveled the globe spreading the word about permaculture, the method of sustainable agriculture that he devised. Permaculture weaves together microclimate, annual and perennial plants, animals, soils, water management and human needs into intricately connected productive communities. Mollison has proved that even in the most difficult conditions permaculture empowers people to turn wastelands into food forests. We will watch a segment of this 2 hour program that features urban solutions in New York City and Harare, Zimbabwe.
City Farmers (1998, 32 minutes)
The gardeners themselves narrate the film, giving a heartwarming and sometimes painful accounting of the struggle to keep their gardens alive.
They tell of life on both sides of the garden fence: from their fight against drug dealers and gangs to the successes of the gardens as food suppliers to families and Senior Centers. As they tend their rows, some of these caretakers are reminded of their childhood days on farms in the South, while others, who have known only pavement under their feet, have found new directions for their futures.

WORKSHOP: Effective Microorganisms and Bokashi
Instructor: Chip Fieberg - Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center's Garden Manager, Patagonia, Arizona
Saving the World with Microorganisms
TIME: 2:00pm to 5:00pm
WHERE: Path to Freedom
COST: $10 - $25 donation.
Space is limited, please RESERVE in advance. This event includes a potluck, so please bring food and non-alcoholic drink to share.
EVENT DESCRIPTION: While focusing mainly on EM's uses in the home, other topics discussed will include the history of EM's discovery, how EM is being used in many different industries to reduce or eliminate pollution, medicinal use of EM, EM's role in global ecology, and of course EM's many uses in organic agriculture.
The workshop will also include a hands-on demonstration of making Activated EM and EM bokashi (bokashi = fermented organic matter).
PRESENTER'S BACKGROUND: Chip's interest in agriculture began in 2000 when he started enjoying the produce from the Santa Monica farmer's markets. It was there that he connected with a small, family owned and operated farm in Malibu named Vital Zuman (http://www.vitalzuman.com)
During the 18 months as a volunteer at Vital Zuman and working the farmer's market selling produce from the farm, Chip helped Vital Zuman gain the reputation of having the freshest, locally grown produce in Los Angeles. He had also entered into the raw food circles in Santa Monica through his presence at the farmer's markets. His interest in raw food is what lead him to discover the Tree of Life in Arizona through a friend that was employed there.
After volunteering in the Tree of Life gardens for one week, he was offered the position of garden assistant and later garden manager. It was at the Tree of Life, that Chip was under the tutelage of John Phillips, an authority in organic farming with over 35 years of experience. John introduced Chip to EM (effective microorganisms) as a means of solving many of the problems that face an organic grower. John also taught Chip about the many other uses of EM ranging from waste control to medicinal use.
Chip has had extensive experience with EM during his 17 months working with John Phillips and has hosted several EM workshops with John for the guests of the Tree of Life. Having done much research and experimentation of his own, Chip has formed deep connections with EM on many levels and is himself developing into an authority on the subject.
