A look at one family's radical homegrown revolution and their urban homestead model.

Little Homestead in the Big City - Changing the world in their own backyard

(Pasadena, CA) A grassroots, revolutionary urban homesteading model in Pasadena is having a deep impact in promoting urban sustainability. Eco pioneers, Jules Dervaes and his family, have taken upon themselves to be the change they wish to see by living the solution. Their sustainable homestead has demonstrated to others how to live a low impact lifestyle by reducing one’s carbon footprint.

Living off the land doesn’t mean moving to the country. The Dervaes family has taken it upon themselves to grow as much of their diet right on a typical urban lot. Over a decade ago, the family smothered their traditional lawn and transformed their city lot into an amazingly productive edible estate. The family’s 1/10 acre garden provides them with all the vegetables, herbs and fruit needed for their vegetarian diet, as well as a viable income. In the summer, their “100 foot diet” consists of nearly 80%-90% of homegrown produce. Even though their garden may be small, it’s hugely productive, yielding over 3 tons (6,000 lbs) of food.

Sharing the urban homestead is a menagerie of farm animals. Goats, chickens, ducks and thousands of worms provide the family with eggs, fertilizer and, in the near future, fresh milk.

In addition to producing most of their own food, the Dervaes clan has managed to decrease their homestead’s reliance on non-renewable resources by using solar panels, energy efficient appliances and a homemade biodiesel processor which turns waste vegetable oil into fuel for their diesel car for only 70 cents a gallon. Taking energy conservation a step further, the Dervaeses strive to “power down” and “unplug.” Instead, they rely on alternative, earth- friendly appliances, such solar ovens, a pedal powered blender, a hand cranked food processor and more.

Not only has this family taken steps to go off-the-grid, but also they are pushing the envelope in water conservation. Buried throughout their garden are unglazed clay pots—an ancient , yet efficient, irrigation system. Soon to be installed are a space saving module water storage system from Australia for rainwater harvesting and a greywater reclamation system that will help reduce their water usage.

This family is a remarkable example of how urbanites can live a green, more sustainable life even in the heart of the city. Their revolutionary journey is well-documented on their extensive and popular website www.PathtoFreedom.com . Their website has over 4 million unique visitors a year and inspires urbanites from over 100 countries to follow the path to freedom through urban self sufficiency.

Jules Dervaes and his family are urban eco pioneers--walking the talk, taking steps to bring about a homegrown revolution by doing what they can, with what they have, where they are – right now!

The Local Food Challenge (22 min)

Before you take another bite of food, think about where your food comes from. That is the message from the Local Food Challenge (LFC), a group of people who have committed to eating foods grown within 250 miles of where they live for one year.

These seven took the challenge because eating locally strengthens personal, community, and environmental health.

More about the filmmaker:

Sunny Johnson is a single mother, wild edible plants instructor, nutritionist, and adventure seeker. The Local Food Challenge documentary highlights seven people's lives in northern Minnesota, who challenged themselves to eat foods grown within 250 miles of where they lived for one year. She did the film on a whim with no past camera or editing experience.

:: FILM DESCRIPTION ::

A dramatic and enlightening 80 minute documentary narrated by Alanis Morissette and Keanu Reeves, revealing how climate change is affecting the lives of people everywhere, with stunning footage from around the world.

Directed by Vermont-based producer Michael Taylor, "The Great Warming" is this summer’s OTHER global warming film, overshadowed, at least for the moment, by Al Gore’s "An Inconvenient Truth."

Produced by Stonehaven Productions, The Great Warming is not only about our global environment, it also looks at the influence of climate change on politics, religion, science, education, energy and economics. The film interweaves startling statements of fact from scientists, opinion-makers and social leaders with a blunt assessment of America’s leadership – or lack of it - in what is clearly the most critical environmental issue of the 21st century. It examines evidence that human activities are provoking an unprecedented era of atmospheric warming and climatic events: more drought, wildfires, flooding, polar melting, more powerful storms, more variable weather… and unprecedented health impacts.

The Great Warming also showcases exciting initiatives aimed at reversing the trend toward permanent damage to our planet, as well as scenes documenting the emerging voice of America’s Evangelical community urging action on climate change from pulpits across the country.

100 MILE POTLUCK

PTF joins the Bay Area Locavores as they challenge people from all over the world to eat within a 100 mile radius of their home. We invite all local eaters (this means you!) to join us in a celebration of our local food cornucopia and in an effort to raise our own awareness of our place within the foodshed.

:: Potluck Guidelines ::

Our goal for this potluck is to eat from within a 100 mile radius of our homes. Failing that, we will attempt to eat foods that come from within our State, or are purchased directly from small scale farmers elsewhere in the world. Some of us will interpret these guidelines more strictly than others, but the main goal is to pay attention to where the food that we eat comes from.

:: FILM DESCRIPTION ::

With humor, hope, and piece of PVC vinyl siding in hand (a remnant from her parent's suburban house), Judith Helfand and Daniel B. Gold explores home, family industry-sponsored science and the ecology of denial.

Questioning her parents decision to put blue vinyl siding on their house, she sets out to find the truth about vinyl: what are the hazards, are there side-effects, are there dangers in the production and disposal of vinyl?

Having lost her uterus from DES poisoning, she shares a bond with the cancer victims who work in and live in the shadow of the vinyl and PVC factories. Judith has this gravelly high voice, a quirky sense of humor, and a vulnerability in the face of corporate America that makes her irresistible.

Exposure to vinyl chloride is an extremely underrated hazard. Research has shown for years (and Helfand makes a strong case for this in her movie) that vinyl chloride is a carcinogen, and that the production & disposal of vinyl is a serious environmental and health risk.

Vinyl (or PVC) is the “most environmentally hazardous consumer product in the world.” The chemical released in its creation and disposal (and likely gradually emitted, at eeenie weenie levels, during its life in between) is the exceptionally deadly dioxin, “the Watergate of molecules.” And as one of the many scientists interviewed for this film asserts, the highly carcinogenic dioxin sticks around for a very long time: if you were “exposed to ten units of dioxin, ten years later, you would still have five units in your body.”

TAKE ACTION! WHAT YOU CAN DO

Plastic is a substance which we (and which was not addressed by the film) are exposed to on a regular basis. So-called "inert" vinyl, found in PVC pipes, vinyl siding, shower curtains, car dashboards, etc., emits small doses of toxic chemicals, which also pose serious concerns.

PTF joins the Bay Area Locavores as they challenge people from all over the world to eat within a 100 mile radius of their home. We invite all local eaters (this means you!) to join us in a celebration of our local food cornucopia and in an effort to raise our own awareness of our place within the foodshed.

:: FILM DESCRIPTION ::

This need to bring agriculture into Cuba began with the fall of the Soviet Union and the loss of more than 50 percent of Cuba's oil imports, much of its food and 85 percent of its trade economy. Transportation halted, people went hungry and the average Cuban lost 30 pounds.

"In reality, when this all began, it was a necessity. People had to start cultivating vegetables wherever they could," a tour guide told a documentary crew filming in Cuba in 2004 to record how Cuba survived on far less oil than usual.

The crew included the staff of The Community Solution, a non-profit organization in Yellow Springs, Ohio which teaches about peak oil - the time when oil production world-wide will reach an all-time high and head into an irreversible decline. Some oil analysts believe this may happen within this decade, making Cuba a role model to follow.

"We wanted to see if we could capture what it is in the Cuban people and the Cuban culture that allowed them to go through this very difficult time," said Pat Murphy, The Community Solution's executive director. "Cuba has a lot to show the world in how to deal with energy adversity."

Cuba is a living example of how a country can successfully traverse what we all will have to deal with sooner or later -- the reduction and loss of finite fossil fuel resources.

The goals of this film are to give hope to the developed world as it wakes up to the consequences of being hooked on oil, and to lift American's prejudice of Cuba by showing the Cuban people as they are. The filmmakers do this by having the people tell their story on film. It's a story of their dedication to independence and triumph over adversity, and a story of cooperation and hope. Several Cubans expressed the belief that living on an island, with its natural boundaries, breeds awareness that there are limits to natural resources.

Everyone who has worked on the documentary hopes that, seeing this film, people will also see the world on which we live, as another, much larger, island.

FILM DESCRIPTION: 50% of America’s electricity is generated from coal. This dirty energy source is causing massive pollution, ecological destruction of natural beauty, and health problems all over the country. Kilowatt Ours reveals the often unreported consequences of our predominantly coal and nuclear powered economy. The film opens with Vice President Dick Cheney's energy policy speech in which Cheney makes the claim that America needs nearly 1900 new power plants in the next 20 years to meet projected electricity demands.

From here, filmmaker Jeff Barrie takes viewers on a journey from the coal mines of West Virginia to the solar panel fields of Florida, as he discovers solutions to America's energy related problems.

Along the way, Jeff and his wife Heather share a plan to eliminate their use of coal and nuclear power at home by employing energy conservation, efficiency and clean, affordable renewable power. Through their learning experience, viewers discover how they can save hundreds of dollars annually on energy bills.
