From earliest history, before machines were employed in the work area, all items were produced by hand. There was no need for a large capital or separate workstations, no need for mass transportation or new clothes. Many people made their living by working at home or near where they lived.

In addition, almost everyone had a garden, or at least a small kitchen garden, where one could grow food. It was common to sell or barter surplus garden produce for money, food staples or services.

Local farmers supplied the town with food through markets that were held in the main square. Each community was self-contained and self-sufficient for the most part.

With the introduction of machines in the Industrial Revolution, there were great changes in people's lives, especially in the area of work Machines were expensive, but there was a big profit to be made if a person could own a couple of machines and employ people to mass-produce items.

When it became possible to mass transit commerce, that was the beginning of the end of home and community. Today, everything is trucked in from hundreds, even thousands, of miles away.

As a family in the 21st century, we are striving to return to the old ways and maintain a variety of home based businesses which allow us to "live where we work."
